Top 10 Products We Trust in Every Remodel
After more than 50 years of remodeling homes across South Jersey, we’ve learned something that most homeowners don’t discover until it’s too late: the products inside your walls, under your floors, and behind your fixtures matter just as much as the ones you can see – maybe more.
Every item on this list has earned its place through real-world performance on our job sites. They’re the materials we rely on because they truly hold up and function the way they should for years after the project wraps.
10: High-Quality Plumbing Valves & Fixtures
A faucet might catch your eye in a showroom, but what really matters is what’s happening inside it. The cartridge is doing the heavy lifting – it’s the difference between a faucet that operates smoothly for a decade and one that starts dripping or stiffening within a few years. We also consider the weight of the body and how well the finish holds up, because a fixture that looks great on installation day but tarnishes by year two isn’t worth the box it came in.
Glazing matters too, especially on sinks and toilets. A properly glazed surface won’t hold stains the way a cheaper one will, and it stays easier to clean over the life of the fixture. When you’re investing in a kitchen or bathroom remodel, these are the things you’ll touch every single day. That tactile quality (i.e., the feel of a handle, the smoothness of operation) is something you notice immediately and never stop noticing.
9: High-Quality Countertops (Engineered or Natural)
Not all countertop materials are created equal, even within the same category. Two slabs of “quartz” from different manufacturers can look similar in a showroom, yet perform very differently in your kitchen. That’s why we lean toward premium engineered surfaces from Casentino; we know what we’re getting with every slab, and so does the homeowner.
For those who want the character that only nature can provide, quartzite and marble remain unmatched. There’s a depth to natural stone that engineered products could approximate but never fully replicate – the way the veining catches light, the subtle variation from one end of the slab to the other. It does ask more of you in terms of maintenance, but when properly sealed, natural stone rewards that attention for decades.
8: High-Quality Flooring Systems
Flooring sets the tone for every room it touches, so we’ve found that engineered hardwoods with wider planks and roughly half-inch thickness hit a sweet spot that’s hard to beat. That added thickness creates a substantial feel underfoot, the kind of solidity that tells you this floor was built to last, not just installed to look good on move-in day. In this case, product selection is critical. A weak core or thin wear layer will show its age more quickly in high-traffic areas.
Of course, installation makes just as big an impact. A floor is only as good as the system beneath it, and when subfloor prep gets rushed (or the product doesn’t acclimate properly), you end up with gaps, squeaks, or finish failure down the road. Getting both the product and the process right is what distinguishes a floor that performs from one that merely looks the part.
7: Quality Interior & Exterior Doors with Premium Hardware/Hinges
Doors are one of those elements that most people don’t think about – until they live with a bad one! A hollow, lightweight door that rattles shut and never quite latches properly cheapens the feel of your entire home. A well-built door is the opposite, as these models have weight; they close with authority while sealing out sound. You can feel the difference the first time you pull it shut.
We spec doors with premium hardware and hinges because those components are doing real work every single day. A quality hinge set won’t sag over time, and a solid latch will engage cleanly thousands of times without loosening.
6: LED Recessed Lighting & Quality Fixtures
Lighting is one of the most impactful elements in any renovation, so it’s an area where product quality varies enormously.
We’ve had excellent results with RAB Lighting’s color-selectable recessed trims. They allow us to fine-tune the warmth and tone of the light to match the space, and they’ve proven reliable across hundreds of installations.
Beyond recessed lighting, we apply the same standard to every fixture or ceiling fan in the project. Finish durability is non-negotiable here; a light fixture or fan that tarnishes or discolors within a couple of years undermines the entire room.
5: Premium Cabinetry & Blum Hardware Systems
You can feel the difference between budget cabinetry and the real thing the moment you open a door or pull out a drawer. The color depth is richer. The surfaces are smoother. Grain matching across an entire kitchen run looks intentional rather than approximate. The construction holds up, too, with better joinery, thicker panels, and enough design flexibility to let us build exactly what the space demands rather than forcing a compromise.
Then there’s the hardware, which is where Blum stands apart. Their hinge and drawer slide systems allow for precise micro-adjustments of doors and drawer fronts after installation (we’re talking millimeter-level fine-tuning).
Why does this matter? Wood moves, houses settle, and cabinetry that was perfectly aligned can shift subtly over time. With Blum hardware, we bring everything back into perfect alignment with a simple adjustment. It’s the type of feature that keeps your kitchen looking like new years down the road.
4: Engineered Structural Members (LVLs and Glulam Beams)
This one doesn’t get the glamour shots, but it might be the most important item on this list. Laminated veneer lumber (LVLs) and glulam beams are engineered structural components that let us true up walls or carry loads that conventional lumber can’t handle reliably. The result is a framework that’s straight, stable, and predictable.
In short, every finished surface in your home depends on the structure behind it being true. If a wall isn’t straight and level, the cabinets mounted to it won’t sit right. The tile won’t line up, and the trim will gap. These engineered members give us a level of precision far beyond traditional lumber’s limits.
3: Quality Tile (Porcelain, Ceramic, or Handmade)
Rectified porcelain from a quality distributor is machined to precise dimensions, which means we can set it with tight, consistent joints and clean lines. Well-made glazed ceramic tile offers similar reliability when it comes from a reputable source. The result is a finished surface that looks intentional yet refined.
The trouble starts with a lower-grade supply. Tile that’s inconsistent in size or slightly out of square forces compromises during installation – wider grout joints to hide imperfections, uneven lippage between tiles, layouts that never quite line up the way they should. We’ve seen it enough times to know that the cost savings on cheap tile get eaten up (and then some) by the problems it creates on the job site. Starting with the right product eliminates those headaches before they ever begin.
2. Schluter Waterproofing Systems
In wet areas – showers, tub surrounds, steam rooms – waterproofing isn’t optional, and it isn’t something we leave to improvisation. Schluter provides a complete, integrated waterproofing system where every component is designed to work with the next.
The whole thing functions as a single tested assembly rather than a patchwork of separate products. There’s no guesswork about compatibility and no weak points where moisture could find its way through to the structure.
For us, Schluter is non-negotiable in any wet-area installation. It’s the foundation that protects everything built on top of it, giving the homeowner confidence that their investment is safe for the long term.
1: Panasonic WhisperFit Exhaust Fans
Ventilation isn’t glamorous, but it’s critical in bathroom renovations. The Panasonic WhisperFit line earns its name; these fans are remarkably quiet, which means homeowners actually leave them running long enough to do their job. That’s a bigger deal than it sounds, because a fan that’s too loud gets switched off early, leaving moisture in the room.
Proper sizing additionally contributes to that high standard. We match the fan’s cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating to the room’s volume to ensure it can actually handle the moisture generated by a hot shower.
This isn’t just about comfort, as lingering moisture degrades finishes over time and creates conditions where mold might take hold. A properly installed WhisperFit fan is quiet enough to forget about, but still powerful enough to protect every surface in the room.
Install Products That Last with Ayars
Every product decision shapes how your home feels and performs five, ten, and twenty years from now. We’d rather have that conversation early, before the drywall goes up – so the finished project reflects the same standard from the framing out to the finish.
The best version of your space is waiting. Let us help you bring it to life!
